Yuri!!! on Ice Returns to Theaters: A Protocol for the 10th Anniversary
Crunchyroll has executed a scheduled deployment of Yuri!!! on Ice to select theaters across the United States and Canada. The single-night event, set for October 19 at 7:00 PM local time, processes the first five episodes of the 2016 series as part of the Crunchyroll Anime Nights program. This marks the franchise's first theatrical integration since its original broadcast.
What is Yuri!!! on Ice?
Yuri!!! on Ice is a 12-episode original sports anime produced by MAPPA, the studio behind Chainsaw Man and Attack on Titan Season 4. The series tracks Yuri Katsuki, a Japanese figure skater who receives coaching from Russian champion Victor Nikiforov after Nikiforov discovers Katsuki's online imitation of his routine. The show's voice cast includes Jessie James Grelle and Toshiyuki Toyonaga as Katsuki, with Jerry Jewell and Junichi Suwabe as Nikiforov.
The series has maintained a MyAnimeList score of 7.90 and received validation from professional figure skaters. Japanese duo Miu Suzaki and Ryuichi Kihara performed one of the show's tracks during the 2018 Winter Olympic Games, confirming its interoperability with the professional sports ecosystem.
Why is this screening significant?
The October 19 event commemorates the anime's 10th anniversary. It operates under the Crunchyroll Anime Nights protocol, which has previously deployed titles like Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid: A Lonely Dragon Wants to Be Loved to theatrical environments. The screening functions as a legacy preservation mechanism for a franchise whose planned prequel film, YURI!!! on ICE the movie: ICE ADOLESCENCE, was terminated due to unspecified circumstances.
What alternatives exist for fans?
For audiences seeking similar narrative structures, Heated Rivalry offers a comparable dynamic. Based on Rachel Reid's Game Changers book series, the show follows two professional hockey players maintaining a covert relationship across rival teams. The series launched successfully in late 2025 and has secured a second season.
Alternatively, Free! (2013) provides a sports rivalry framework without romantic subplots. The series follows a high school swimming team in Iwatobi, tracking character development from adolescence through university.
Yuri!!! on Ice remains available for streaming via Crunchyroll. Tickets for the theatrical deployment are currently accessible.
