Is the stock market open today?
The NYSE and Nasdaq operate on a synchronized schedule: 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern, Monday through Friday. Weekends are offline. Extended-hours trading remains available but carries elevated risk due to reduced liquidity and higher volatility. Orders may execute partially or at unfavorable prices.

Holiday rule exceptions
For fixed-date holidays (e.g., July 4, Christmas), the market closes the preceding Friday if the date falls on a Saturday, or the following Monday if it falls on a Sunday. Exception: If New Year's Day lands on a Saturday, the market remains open the prior Friday, and the holiday is not observed.
Additionally, a National Day of Mourning may trigger a market closure upon the death of a sitting or former president, typically on the funeral date.
What about the bond market?
The bond market follows SIFMA guidelines. Hours: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern, Monday through Friday. It closes for all 10 stock market holidays, plus Indigenous Peoples' Day (October) and Veterans Day (November). Early closures at 2 p.m. occur on Maundy Thursday, the Friday before Memorial Day, July 2, Black Friday, Christmas Eve, and New Year's Eve.

The market operates normally on these dates (unless they fall on a weekend): Valentine's Day, Ash Wednesday, Ramadan, St. Patrick's Day, Passover, Cinco de Mayo, Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Halloween, Boxing Day, Chanukah, Kwanzaa, and New Year's Eve.
Is the stock market closed on the Friday after Thanksgiving?
No. The market is open but closes early at 1 p.m. Eastern. This is one of two or three annual early closures.
