The August 28, 2026, iteration of WWE SmackDown terminated without an official resolution. Sami Zayn executed a unilateral disruption of the No. 1 contender triple threat match, incapacitating Kevin Owens, Gunther, Finn Balor, CM Punk, and two referees. The event advanced several storylines toward WWE Sunday Night's Main Event, though the middle card underperformed relative to the main event's intensity.
What happened in the No. 1 contender match?
The triple threat between Kevin Owens, Gunther, and Finn Balor was scheduled to determine the next challenger for the Undisputed WWE Championship. Balor appeared to secure the victory when Zayn intervened, pulling him from a pinfall attempt and neutralizing the referee. Zayn then incapacitated a replacement referee, CM Punk, and all three competitors with the championship belt. The show concluded without a bell, leaving the contender slot vacant.
How did CM Punk and Kevin Owens escalate their rivalry?
Owens opened the broadcast with a promo addressing his previous loss to Punk, attributing the defeat to Zayn's interference. Punk interrupted, followed by Gunther and Balor, creating a four-way verbal standoff. General manager Nick Aldis resolved the dispute by sanctioning the triple threat match. The unresolved finish positions Zayn as a destabilizing variable in the championship equation.
What were the key results on the undercard?
Nia Jax pinned WWE Women's Champion Chelsea Green in a tag match, exploiting a pre-existing facial injury. Jacy Jayne retained the Women's United States Championship against Paige, with interference from Fallon Henley and Lainey Reid. Tatum Paxley won her SmackDown in-ring debut against Michin, debuting the Cemetery Drive finisher. Nikki Bella attacked Paige post-match, continuing her heel trajectory.
How did Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton build their Sunday match?
Rhodes delivered a promo ahead of his Sunday Night's Main Event confrontation with Orton. Orton responded with personal attacks, referencing Rhodes' past as his chauffeur and disparaging his family. The exchange generated genuine heat, though Rhodes' counter referencing Orton's father failed to match the intensity. Their match remains scheduled for the upcoming event.
What is the state of the championship picture?
The No. 1 contender slot remains undetermined due to Zayn's interference. The Undisputed WWE Championship picture now includes Zayn as a rogue actor, with Punk, Owens, Gunther, and Balor all claiming grievance. The unresolved finish creates protocol ambiguity, requiring either a rematch or an administrative decision from Aldis.
Quick assessment: top-heavy card, unresolved variables
SmackDown delivered premium-level intensity in the main event segment but suffered from a sluggish middle card. The tag match and championship defense lacked momentum, with the Paige-Jayne bout particularly hindered by pacing issues. The Rhodes-Orton promo and the chaotic finish provided sufficient value to advance the Sunday event's narrative architecture.
